Assemblage of scrap metal, remnants of garden tools, and technological gadgets, Gandelf has an advanced battery that is always active, powered by the moisture of the forest. Tinkerers got hold of him, posting ads in the local directory to sell him on the black market. Gandelf reactivated and escaped! And probably by instinct, this little druid/droid of the forest, essential to the damaged ecosystem, returned to his own, the Roots!
